New Management for the New Year

Friends of Bramley Baths, has tonight announced plans to take over the management of Bramley Baths during December 2012 with the intention of opening the doors in the New Year, January 2013, to a new era at the Edwardian bath house. The announcement was made at an open meeting of Friends of Bramley Baths at the Bramley Villager, Broad Lane, Bramley at 7.00pm, organised by the Friends to invite people to get involved in the plans.

In May 2012, Leeds City Council’s Executive Board formally accepted a bid by the group to transfer Bramley Baths on a 25 year lease at a peppercorn rent. Friends of Bramley Baths will work closely with Leeds City Council in the run-up to the handover in order to train and prepare staff for the transition, ensuring that services are not interrupted.

Schools swimming lessons will continue uninterrupted and as timetabled from January 2013, with full details made available to parents by staff at Bramley Baths and Friends of Bramley Baths, in Autumn 2012. Bramley Baths will continue to offer a full programme of activities running over a 49 hour week, including public swimming, private and school swimming lessons, gym, fitness classes and private hire of facilities for groups and clubs. The longer term aspiration is to restore the service to full time opening hours if demand for this continues.

Friends of Bramley Baths will operate the initiative as a BENCOM, a not-for-profit organisation that ensures the scheme is managed for community benefit. A Board of Governors will be elected through the Friends Group. A professional management team, trained lifeguards & qualified instructors will be part of the new operational structure. Bramley residents and people across the city are invited to become part of the Friends group, to help support the new enterprise, share ideas to help keep the service relevant to customers, and ensure that the enterprise thrives.

Friends of Bramley Baths intend to make swimming, access to the gym and fitness classes widely available and affordable, and to continue to offer a high quality service to customers. Friends of Bramley Baths will continue to accept LEEDS Card discounts and plans for an independent membership scheme are in development in place of the current Bodyline Card initiative. Further details of the new membership scheme will be announced in the Autumn of 2012 and existing Bodyline customers using Bramley Baths will be contacted directly ahead of the change.

The Friends are inviting Leeds residents to get involved in the scheme, to share ideas and practical skills, and to carry on regularly using the swimming pool and gym at the Baths in the coming months.

  1. I’d like there to be more different fitness classes or the same ones but more than once in the week, like yoga, Pilates, Fitball and aqua Zumba, maybe some dance classes could be hosted at BB as well.

    • Hi Jenny, thanks for posting. What sorts of dance classes do you think would be good and what sorts of ‘different’ fitness classes would you like us to consider….it’s something we’re very keen to explore having done a space-hopper exercise class a few years ago and found it brilliant fun and really good exercise. This might not be the kind of ‘different’ that you mean…

      • hula hooping would be fun! there’s a guy that teaches it at the Yoga Space in Meanwood. tai chi, Bollywood dancing, streetdance, circle dancing.

    • Hi Jennhy – the new exercise class programme is on the website. You mentioned you’d like more classes like yoga, Pilates..so take a look, there are 3 pilates classes, 2 yoga classes, two zumba classes (and zumba for kids) and hoop dance (hula hoop with circus teacher Pete White) starts on 23 Jan. Aqua zumba is a suggestion we’re looking into. Select Bramley Baths on the website homepage to see all the information.
